Rochdale Lacrosse Local Development Officer Mark Leonard
Rochdale Lacrosse Club LDO Mark Leonard:
Born and raised in Syracuse, New York, Mark started playing lacrosse at the age of 9 when his school district, Weshill, picked up the sport. Mark decided to continue his career by going to Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, where he played all 4 years as a close defender and long-stick midfielder at the Division I level. He started over 30 career games through his senior year but suffered a season ending injury this March as he fractured his right fibula against league foe St. Joseph’s University. Mark enjoyed his best season during his junior year when the team’s defensive unit held MAAC competitors to 6 goals or less per game and won the MAAC Championship, giving the team its first NCAA tournament bid in school history. He recorded one career point when he assisted a goal in the 2008 MAAC Championship game. Personally that season, Mark scooped up 41 ground balls, which was good enough for second by any long-stick and caused 21 turnovers, which led the team. During his career at Canisius, Mark played in over 40 games, collecting 70 ground balls and caused more than 40 turnovers.
Mark’s efforts on the field, in the classroom, and in the community earned him the Presidential Scholar Athlete award after being named senior captain of the men’s lacrosse team this season and graduating with an admirable grade point average. He received his degree in Marketing and Business Management.
Being raised in lacrosse family and community, Mark began his coaching career 10 years ago, under the direction of his father, when his family started a new youth program for the kids in the local school distract. The league has grown to a successful level of over 250 participants at all levels ranging from kindergarten through grade 8. In that time, Mark coached three of those teams to championships, two of them boasting unblemished records.
Mark is the middle of three boys in his family. His older brother, Steven, also played and graduated from Canisius in 2007 and his little brother, Brett, is the starting goalie at Keuka College and will graduate in 2011.
